Basic Studies for the Breeding of Crinum maritimum

Abstract
This study was carried out to investigate the leaf emergency and elongation speed, number of leaves and flower bud differentiation, flower bud differentiation period and meiotic period, morphology and male gametophyte formation, fertilization, seed-setting, seed germination, chromosome number, and karyotype in 25 years old Crinum maritimum.
1. The number of survived leaves in C. maritimum were 12.2 from November to February, 17 July to August, and 12 November to next March. The number of withered leaf were 8¡9 from April to July and 12 October to next March.
2. Flower bud was differentiated 3 years before flowering, and meiosis was begun 1 year before. The leaves between the 1st and 2nd floral axis, 2nd and 3rd, 3rd and the 1st floral axis in next year were 4, 4¡8, and 8¡10, respectively.
3. Floral axis showed perfect elongtion in 13 days from late July to mid August, and in 19 days from late June to early July.
4. The length of floral axis before wintering to be flowering 1 year later were 1st 10§¯, 2nd 6.3§¯, and 3rd 3.5§¯, and those of 2 years later lst 2.2§¯, 2nd 1.2§¯, and 3rd 0.7§¯, and those of 3 years later 1st 0.4§¯, and 2nd 0.1§¯.
5. The length of floral axis elongated perfectly was 90§¯ or so from the soil surface, and one inflorescence had 28.7¡35.7 flowers, and one flower had 5¡7 capsules, and one capsule had 1¡3 seeds.
6. The times of flowering and anthesis were a.m 6¡9 and a.m 8¡12, and flowering days of one inflorescence and lifetime of one flower were 813 days and 2 days or so, respectively.
7. In the flower of C. maritimum having 1 pistil and 6 stamens, the length of peduncle, ovule, stigma, petal, and filament were 5.38, 1.44, 3.28, 5.82 and 3.25§¯, respectively, and the width of petal was 5.63§¯.
8. The length and width of capsule were 3.7§¯ and 4.5§¯, and the length, width, and weight of seed were 3.0§¯, 2.4§¯, and 16.58, respectively.
9. The chromosome were n=11(22) number, 4.8¡14.6um size, submetacentric in 3 pairs of A, H and K, and subtelocentric in 7 pairs of B, C, D, E, F, I and J, and metacentric in 1 pairs of G without SAT.
